A stylized and delicate depiction of a magical and immortal, bright auburn-haired, pointy-eared fairy woman. Purple butterfly wings, bodice, skirt, and arm bands coupled with a slender olive-skined body poised in the yogic lotus position atop an impossiblr ladder of variegated and flawlessly balanced stones. One of the one hundred and fifty-six thematic images of "otherworldly" inhabitants in this compendium. The artist herself "suggests" the purpose and meaning of her endeavors. "When asked to explain my work, I often try to remain vague of the specifics. I would much rather, the viewer construct their own tale. I want you to look at one of my paintings and think 'I want to be there' or 'I would like to know that creature better'. While I paint I can see the characters moving and talking in my head as if they really existed. They are almost like my companions, each having a different personality, quirks and habits. My hope is that others will view these characters and form a similar bond with them.", Amy Brown. Using the iconography of body language and form to project philosophy and tone, Mystic, surrounded within the pages of this book by a pantheon of fantasy figures, personifies and beckons Brown's subtle and compelling invitation. Timelessly whispering to the viewer, immerse yourself into the realm of this possibility and in your own way believe.

Although strectching the boundaries between perception and reality, the fairy figure achieves balance and centre through her classic lotus posture. Through the ages of cultural history this pose has been universally associated with very real ideas, practices, and personages all dedicated to the pursuit and attainment of health, enlightenment, and universal truth. Brown's adept use of actual anatomical symmetry while introducing idealized elements from fairy mythos (pointed ears, gossamer wings, and an enchanted knowing awareness) subconciously guides the viewer to an intrinsic acceptance of the possibility of this otherwise impossible world. Her use of the whorling filligree tatoos, and jewelry adds to the concept of the exotic while quietly acknowledging some of the real cultural markers associated with these body arts, strengthening the individual thru ritual and personal human expression. Awareness and interaction in contemporary society allow all of these physical and philosophical elements of fantasy and fact expressed thru the body in visual culture to combine and to interconnect the art, artist, and viewer thru many levels of perception and purpose adding infinite meaning, variety, and depth to our human family.

Performance : The Art Of Body Painting

<img style="float: right; Body paintings appeal to many men and women. Nevertheless, body painting is not new. For example, the fictional character Jill Masterton (Shirley Eaton) from James Bond's Goldfinger (1964). “In the film, Jill is a paid spy, working for Auric Goldfinger. She appeared in the film for no more than five minutes, but her death in the film — she is painted head-to-toe in gold paint — remains one of the most iconic scenes in movie history.” [1] In fact, body painting goes a lot further back in history and is a part of many cultures.

However, when these types of provocative images are readily available to see in the media and online, they contribute to the perceptions and expectations of young people. This in turn can lead to one believing they can be the center of attention and could inflate a persons ego. This type of manipulation can be damaging in the long run. Models are meticulously evaluated and judged by many people involved in the production. During the lead up to the publication each year, every model is expected to perform in such a manner that allows for their best chance to make the final publication. It may be considered art, but it can lead to regrettable decisions. After all, underneath the body paint there is the naked body.

Pre-owned BMW (by Dae Lee)

<img style="float:left; A young girl about 15 years old, supposedly naked, in the picture is basically representing the pre-owned BMW. It also says “You know you’re not the first. But do you really care?” This pre-owned BMW advertisement raised many voices from women saying it is offending and degrading. Also many people in the states thought this advertisement wasn’t appropriate, but in Greece, the legal age for sexual activity is 15 years. Basically this advertisement wasn’t intended for the Americans, but the Greeks. Any advertisements such as this would be banned in the states.
Women have been appearing in car advertisements for the last several decades. It is either about a car’s performance or women, trying to appeal sexually. However, it is only recent that they started to compare women to cars directly. Usually a very attractive woman would be driving the car, making the viewers to want to drive the car to be with attractive woman in the advertisement. The young woman in the advertisement is staring at the viewer, and the quotes are meant to be her own words. It is obviously implying that the “used women” is still beautiful just like the pre-owned BMWs.

Native American Ear Piercings

Native American earrings have a long history and tradition. In the past, Native Americans made earrings out of bones from animals, plant material, and marine shells. They believed that by wearing earrings, they could ward off evil spirits trying to enter through openings in their bodies such as their ears. Also, they believed that earrings could also grant the wearer healing powers, inner strength, and protection from enemies.

With the introduction of metals such as silver and copper, these earrings became more metal dominant and have given designers a wider range of designs. In addition, with the addition of semi-precious metals such as opal, turquoise, and onyx, the earrings have also become more colorful and beautiful. Today, people wear these earrings more as a fashion statement rather than for religious purposes. Also, these earrings can be purchased at affordable prices, thus allowing young people to buy them. However, there are also beautiful pieces that are very expensive. Nonetheless, these earrings are definitely worn as a way to express the wearer's individuality and to enhance one's beauty.

"SPICY PARIS" by Cesar Torres

In March 2005, Carl’s Jr. pushed television advertising to the limit when it released its commercial for “The Spicy BBQ Six Dollar Burger” featuring Paris Hilton. The commercial starts with Paris Hilton entering a room in a provocative swimsuit. Paris Hilton is then shown washing a Bentley automobile and soaping herself all while eating “The Spicy BBQ Six Dollar Burger.” The commercial ends with Hilton’s signature phrase, “That’s Hot”, displayed on the screen.

The “Spicy Paris” commercial was created to attract both male and female viewers. Young hungry men were fascinated by the provocative and sexual content of the commercial. Woman enjoyed watching it because Paris Hilton was an intriguing cultural icon at that moment. The commercial indicates that our society is youth obsessed. Carl’s Jr. chose Paris Hilton because she was very popular amongst young viewers at that time. Young girls idolized Paris; they wanted to be rich and beautiful like her. While young boys found her attractive and lusted over her. By observing this commercial it’s difficult to determine what Carl’s Jr. is trying to sell, however the message about our society cannot be mistaken. The commercial shows how our values have changed and how our obsession for the rich and famous is getting out of hand.

Armani Markets a Beckham Body by Ryan Fernandez

Giorgio Armani has been a designer and manufacturer in the fashion industry since nineteen seventy five. Over the years, their advertisements have featured many prominent models, celebrities, and athletes. This one in particular depicts David and Victoria Beckham, who are well known as a soccer and pop music star respectively. It is an advertisement for the Emporio Armani brand of underwear and is in their typical black and white color style. This image is intended to be viewed in different places and scenarios. It is often in a store near the products, on billboards, or in magazines.

Their poses portray a sense of waiting or wanting, and they are looking outward toward the viewer, as if it is they who are desired. Along with the poses, their positioning on a disheveled bed forms a perfect depiction of a scene set just before intercourse. Psychologically, it suggests that your sexual desires, along with the man or woman of your dreams, wait for you within the lifestyle that Emporio Armani provides. Its presence, as well as the long history of similar advertisements in today's culture, suggests that human beings act impulsively on sexual desires and long to be wanted by others, especially the opposite sex.

FURious by Gaspar Rodriguez

Body painting is a movement that uses the human body to display images with the use of paint or other materials. It is temporary, as opposed to tattoos, other permanent modifications, and is most often used by women. Often, it is used at sporting events, raves, and some festivals. It had a revival in the 60’s particularly because it became a commonly used form in protests and in transmitting a message to society. This photo shows two women from the animal rights group PETA who painted their bodies as animals. Their bodies are covered in orange, black, and white paint that is designed to look like fur.

By doing so, their painted bodies make the strong statement that wearing animal fur should be forbidden. Their painted fur points out the irony in wearing another animal’s skin as clothing, since the two women are wearing virtually nothing but their own painted skin. The use of body painting effectively sends the message and offers a mocking commentary aimed at those who wear fur. Among its other uses, this art recreates the meaning of what and how the body can be used to send messages.

McGhee’s Sextuplets by Shanea Woods

In 2010, a photograph of an African American married couple lying on the floor nearly covered by their six naked newborn babies surfaced on the internet. The McGhee family became an internet sensation and was also dubbed the McGhee’s Sextuplet. Before this photograph, the couple, Rozonno and Mia McGhee, had been struggling to have children for three years before turning to in vitro fertilization. Mia became pregnant with twins, but had a miscarriage. After that painful ordeal, they tried again. The procedure finally worked, but the egg morphed into six babies. They became famous by accident when Mia posted the picture on Facebook, so that her husband’s relatives could view their six newborn children for the first time. Suddenly, people began sharing the picture amongst themselves. The picture became adored by millions of viewers because the photograph represents their journey towards parenthood.

The McGhee’s Sextuplets is a perfect example of a display and spectacle. For example, the skin to skin action displayed in the picture represents unconditional love and affection the couple have for their babies, which draws the viewers’ attention because they probably relate to that bond the family shows. In addition, the photograph also displays the different gender roles the parents play. For example, almost all the babies are on top of the father’s back, and the mother seems to be making sure the babies are fine. This reinforces the gender roles because it represents the father’s duties to provide for his family and the mother’s duties is to nurture her children". This picture also presents itself as a spectacle because the McGhees had six babies using in vitro fertilization, which makes the public aware and amazed by fertility treatments.

Alexamenos Graffito by Chris Salazar

This piece is arguably one of the oldest known depictions of Jesus Christ. Known as the Alexamenos Graffito, it was discovered in 1857, dating from the 1st to 3rd century. The inscription states, "Alexamenos worships his God". On the top right hand corner, an upper case "Y". The bottom of the "Y" represents one's path in life, and the division of the "Y" represents separate destinations one could take in their life span: one being suffering, and the other bliss. The emphasis of the "Y" in this case represented the suffering one has undertook in following this God. During this period, many Pagans misunderstood what Christians stood for and practiced, leading to a great persecution of Christians. For instance, during communion, the bread representing Christ's flesh and the wine his blood, upon hearing this, Pagans took this to suggest that Christians were practicing cannibalism.

Similarly, Pagans at the time thought Christians and Jews alike worshiped a donkey's head. Not much is known why, yet sufficient evidence from historians during the period like Tertullian and Marcus Minucius Felix do write in support of this view. Nevertheless, the views of the "Y," and donkey's head may have been appropriate. Jesus said in John 15:18, "If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first". In the anguish, the Disciples of Christ uncovered in following him, they also found their bliss. As for the donkey's head, a king of that region of the world, during the period the Alexamenos Graffito was created and years before, rode on a horse during conquest and war, yet during peace a king rode on a donkey. So, it is fitting that his head be a donkey's head as Jesus himself rode on one as displayed in Matthew 21:5, "Say to Daughter Zion, 'See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.'"

Work Cited

"John 15 NIV - The Vine and the Branches I am the true - Bible Gateway." Bible Gateway. N.p., n.d. Body piercings are ancient traditions of art, either by puncturing or cutting the body. The history of piercing goes back five thousand years ago in Egypt. The oldest mummified remains of humans discovered, were pierced. In many ancient cultures piercings were considered a mark of beauty and wealth. As piercings became more widespread, piercings of the naval, nose, eyebrows, lips, tongue, nipples and genitals grew in popularity. Some people get piercing for religious and spiritual rituals, while others do it for self expression, sexual pleasure or for aesthetics. Davidson has done all of her piercings. She started out with just a couple piercings and has increased over the years to keep up with her world record title and for her own personal pleasure.
Elaine Davidson is a great example of display and spectacle because of her piercings, tattoos and colorful braids. The image above was taken on November 11, 2003, when Elaine Davidson was exhibited in the Scary, Freaky Body Art exhibition at the Tate Modern Art gallery in London as she pokes her finger through her tongue. She easily captivates people’s attention, because of her many piercings and colorful personality. She has been the guest at many conventions for piercings, tattoos and fetishes, and performing at different festivals all other the world. Many would think that people would be scared of her, but it is the opposite. They find her fascinating and interesting, and try to kiss and hug her.

Zodiac signs as Tattoos

Tattoos have been around for many years and are known as art forms of expression on a persons body that date back to 12,000 years. They are created by inserting coloring beneath the surface of the skin. Many different cultures express tattoos in different ways. There are four main types of tattoos: amateur, professional, traditional, and cosmetic tattoos. As seen in the picture above, these tattoos are professional tattoos and signify the different types of zodiac sign's. Tattoos can also pose a meaning to people. It can signify what some one has gone through, represent them, and/or be a remembrance of some one special.

The zodiac signs are put on the women's bodies to show the beauty of the different sign's and the ways they can be portrayed as art. Each woman in the picture poses in a different way to express the difference between the signs. The difference in the colors of the tattoos signifies the beauty in them. Today, tattoos are meant to be symbol for a person. Each woman have a symbol with them that they will keep for life, because it is who they are. The human body is bare, and with the growth of tattooing, it is easy to change a bare human body into a piece of glowing art work. Furthermore, tattoos express a person and show who they really are from the outside.

Within A Body by Alfonso Hueso)

In 1998 Travis Barker introduced himself to the pop punk world as the drummer for the band Blink-182. Standing five feet and ten inches, Barker is filled with tattoos covering most of his upper body. His drummer attitude and his physical appearance, does not project an aggressive persona, but indeed it proves his strength, success, and survival throughout the hardship of his life over the previous years. This musician does not only play musical instruments, he also happened to have his own reality television show with his wife and his three kids at the end of the second series called, Meet The Barkers in 2006-2007. His impressive hair style and
his drummer talent does not quite stop there. Travis Barker introduced his clothing line Famous Stars and Straps along with DTA, and a DC shoe wear edition, Alias Remix. As his business grew, Barker became a big influence to his fiends and his followers inspiring them to improve in life and to provide for one's family.

Barker is introduced as spectacle and style, releasing his expressions not only through his music, but his clothing as well. Famous Stars and Straps was produced for people, including those who want to live life without its limits and feel free to roam all over the streets. Famous Stars and Straps has produced a wide selection of merchandise dark and light colors manufacturing t-shirts 100% cotton, to a few choices of silver chains of an "F" logo. Although black and white are the dominant colors, the production line has provided several t-shirts in a variety of styles and colors to fit all people. They would make any rule they desire and would command anyone anywhere. The Pharaohs protected their land/s and conquer others. When a land was taken over by the pharaohs, the villagers from the land would bowel and become his slave (pharaohs were only male). The pharaohs would do religious practices as well. He was god itself to all of his people, “the pharaohs represented the gods on Earth”. Since the pharaohs were the “most powerful men” in their lands on Egypt, servants build statues and portraits of them and one of them was for Ramesses II.
In the picture a semi-statue of Ramesses II was made by his people. The statue may have some damage but it still has the beauty of ancient art. The surface of the statue seems bumpy but smooth. The color of the statues features is dark and light. The statue does show any sign of clothes except for the thing on his head that represents has a crown. Also, since if shows no clothes, the half-naked body represents power.

Work Cited Page “Pharoh: Lord of the Two Lands.” Ancient Egypt. It was launched in 1924 by Philip Morris as a woman’s cigarette. It was portrayed as a lady like cigarette until the 1950’s where men were targeted by the use of manly figures: cowboy, sea captain, weightlifters etc.,. Within a year Marlboros stock market grew and became the fourth best-selling brand. With his much success, Philip Morris decides to stick with the cowboy as head of the advertisement. The cowboy is seen as an all American working hard men in whom many Americans relate to.

Marlboro ads target the average American by making a connection with its audience which then can relate themselves to the ad. The famous cowboy signifies a hardworking man that loves to take a cigarette breaks as a way to relax. Ads use face and body expression to give the character feelings and make it more realistic to viewers. Once the connection builds, viewers will try the product.

She Wolf by (Zachary Weber)

Shakira, is a well know music artist, shows off her sexual desire by posing nude in cage for her new album, She Wolf. Giving off a sexually oriented attraction, gives us an idea of how she is expressing herself. The cage is a symbolic figure by having Shakira’s sexual desire being locked up like a caged animal, which is then the title of her new album She Wolf. She Wolf exhibits a lust towards her style of music and enhances her beauty by showing off her nice flawless body.

This image can give off a strong sexual meaning. In today’s society nudity is censored in almost every television, and film. With no clothes, in her sexual appearance strongly grabs the attention of people. Most of the animation characters are from Manga. Suzumiya Haruhi is very famous and popular in Japan. Because the character’s figure and fashion for cloth and hair style are very unique. Japanese animators have great talent to make the animation characters. Most of the girl’s animation characters are very beautiful and cute, and this character is also cute. If it becomes more and more popular, it produces varies of products such as movies, and video games. When the animators make this character, it is considered as a copy of the girls’ body. They try to make a cute girl, and it makes girls think about their own figures and hair styles and clothes.

The character has greatly influenced Japanese girls. It is an example of display and simulacra and spectacle because the character’s body and cloth and technique to wear makeup are paid attention by the girls. The girls try to imitate the character as their own figure, but the character is an animation character which is not real human being because they can’t be that character. They want to be skinny, and try to be big eyes by makeup like the character. It is a model of beauty, and it was made by animator because it is easy to make a cute girl which is not in the real world. This character is an object of admiration for girls.

A Spectacle of Davids "House of Davids"

The infamous " House of Davids" located in the original Beverly Hills which is known as Hancock Park, CA that has hosted several people in the spotlight such as the late Nat King Cole ; which is now hosted by famous R& B singer Norwood Young or the King of Hancock Park as some suggest. However, Norwood is not known for his acclaimed fame ; he is known for his spectacle of twenty Davids that encompass the front of his lawn. Youngwood stated in an interview that the spectacle of David statues have a symbolic meaning attatched to each of them. Norwood stated that the statues represent the many trials and tribulations , which he refers to as Goliaths in his life similar to David in the Bible.

The David statues when observed closely resemble the David in Florence, Italy. This is an example of simulacra of the 20th century; however, some might consider this spectacle kitsch because The David has been replicated several times in North America alone. The original statue of David was created for the Catholic Church. However, the spectacle of Davids was built to reflect on R&B singer Norwood Youngs life. It was advertised as being low in carbohydrates then later released more flavors: Michelob Ultra Amber, Ultra Lime Cactus, Ultra Pomegrante Raspberry, and Ultra Dragon Fruit Peach, Ultra. Each fruit flavors contain the following nutrient content: 107 calories, 6.0g carbohydrates, 0.5 proteins and 0.0 fat per 12 oz. bottle. When Michelob started marketing their new line, their advertisements featured people engaging in sporting activities and sponsored professional athletes such as, PGA Tour player, Sergio Garcia and Seven-time Tour de France, Lance Armstrong, who also is their new spokesperson and ambassador.

In America recently, there has been a growing epidemic of people feeling the need to lose weight and get back into shape. This Michelob Ultra campaign is a perfect example of how companies use people’s greatest weakness to encourage them to buy their products, using their insecurities. By sponsoring well-renown professional athletes for their Michelob Ultra campaign, they give their viewers the approval that when they drink this beer they will be in a pro-active lifestyle like these athletes. By putting those two images together, a top shape athlete in action and a picture of the beer, you get the feeling that you are making the right decision of drinking a Michelob Ultra. So now every time that someone wants to go grab a drink with their coworkers after work, but has a guilty conscience cause they don’t want the extra unnecessary calories, the image of the well-built athlete will come to mind to say it’s okay. But in reality, the advertisement is a big misjudgment that it is not the beer that will get you the pro athletes body.

Young Dancers "Too sexy, too soon?"

Competitive, amateur, and professional dance performances have been long known fortheir outrageous and exaggerated costumes. Many dancers choose brightcolors, flashy rhinestones, and bold makeup to draw attention tothemselves while on stage. While the strong colors and embellishmentsare understandable as far as performing goes, the amount of skindancers are showing and type of make up being worn in contemporarydance is borderline pornographic in many routines. These types ofoutfits are making appearances in both the adult and juveniledancers. The question then becomes: when have costumes gone farenough that they become inappropriate and immoral?

Youngdancers maintain the perception that they must show their stomachsand legs in short costumes to score well with the judges. This typeof thinking is reinforced by parents who apply makeup meant for womenfar beyond the age of the young girls. Dancers will often hold on tothis mentality as they age, continually performing in short dresseswith bright makeup covering their faces. The intent? To shine themost of the competitors or performers, and exaggerate the characterthey are attempting to portray. However, what outsiders unfamiliarwith the world of dance are concerned with are young women and girlsdegrading themselves on stage. Even more unfortunate, is howdistracting the outfits are, and how much they take away from whatwould otherwise be talented and energetic young dancers. When videoperformances of these particular young ladies was shown to the worldvia the news, the opening line used to describe the girls was “toosexy, too soon?” The hope of the concerned public is that theseyoung girls will not carry over their dancer mentalities into howthey portray themselves in the real world.

Ashleigh McIvor 2012 Acura Commercial by Odra Echeverria

When you think of an Acura more sport cars come to mind than luxury cars. In this commercial Acura is trying to convince the consumer that not only can their cars be sporty, but they can also be luxurious. Just like Ashleigh McIvor can be a sporty adrenaline junkie, she can easily transform herself into a refined, elegant woman ready for any formal event. The new 2012 Acura TL has everything one wants in a sports car but has also has the luxury. It has all the power of a sports car in a nice elegant body.

The image of ones body and what it can do can persuade and have a tremendous influence on decisions made everyday. By the 1930s, anime became an alternate form of storytelling. Anime is considered a visual art form. The character styles in an anime can vary from artist to artist; to this picture, the artist created a character with a big head and little body; the little body carries small hands and small legs, but the big head contains large eyes with tiny nose and tiny mouth. Combine with special shape, the artist use color styles like purple hair, colored skin with a blurred background. This anime has big ears and tail, but two legs and two hands; it is just like a human animal. Artists have succeeded in using this type of anime in cartoon for kids and making them laugh.

Anime is a good example of spectacle because of many different animation techniques that the artist used. The way that anime is presented is breathtaking due to the sheer amount of details the artist put into it. It is very different from Western animation styles. Sometimes it makes the viewer wonder what is going on inside the artist head when they are creating anime characters. Each anime are different from each other but they all have the same purposes to support for entertainment. As time goes by, anime is more developed and more creative in many areas not just in cartoons for kids but also in movies, television series, video games and commercials for adults all over the world.

A Strong Man by Bianca Lagunas

The image of Ernesto Che Guevara is a powerful one because it is about a man that fought for what he believed in. Che Guevara is a main symbol in to the revolutionaries because he was one of the men that helped over through Cuba’s government. He had a voice in politics and for that he was killed. The photo itself had a thousand words to describe it for the reason that it has a meaning to it, and wants to show the people of America what a hero can look like. The colors in the photo symbolize strength and rebel because of the red, he wanted to stand out from all the others in the political world. To this day he is a hero, legend, and icon. People wear his shirts and wave a flag with his picture on it when there is a protest going on. Che Guevara is a powerful symbol in the political world today for the reason that we will see his figure in the next revolution that may come. He is also a masculine figure.

In contrast Che Guevara has been seen as a man that teamed up with Fidel Castro and was not liked for doing that. He had some sort of bad reputation after that incident. People have different views of looking at the picture of him, like they can say something negative about Guevara. In the end the photo of Ernesto Che Guevara should be a reminder to all humans that with great power comes great responsibilities. For this one has the right to fight for what they believed in and never back down. Even the urban youth can get inspired by a little story of a man that they want to grow up and be like.

Women in Combat by Karla Gil

She was not physically strong as a man. She was more like a delicate rose, yet Rosie the Riveter was mentally strong, and very smart. During World War II, The United States faced war, and economic crisis. Riveter, and the other women helped their country to overcome that crisis. While, men were in the war fighting, women were the ones doing the hard work. Many women, took men’s job by working in mechanics, engineers, and many other jobs that required the strength of a man. While, simultaneously being a mother, and taking care of their children. It was amazing what women were doing during War World II because they proved to society that women could fend for themselves. Although, women were getting paid less for their work, and they did not have the rights a man had back that time period. That is why Riveter, encouraged women to work hard and prove that they can efficiently do a man’s job. In the end, Riveter was a strong beautiful woman who believe that women should be equal to men. In her picture she appears with a blue collared button up shirt, and red bandana with white dots, showing her muscle making her to look tough, and pretty. Overall, Riveter, and the women were seeking for equal rights because they were tired of being portrayed as the weaker gender.

Rosie the Riveter was and is an epitome of a woman. She fought for women rights, and worked hard in factories, while men were combating in war. Despite, the criticism women faced for doing men roles, they never stop. On the contrary, they even work hard to prove that they were capable of doing challenging jobs. With demanding jobs Riveter and the other women managed to look beautiful and keep their femininity side. To the end, Riveter and women contribute with a lot during World War II. All in all, Riveter became an icon for her determination in women’s role. Today, people remember her with great respect, and famous slogan “ We Can Do It”.

Crazy Fans by Breanna Marks

College football provides the chance to watch athletes who do not get paid to play and give it their all every game, not to mention all the die-hard fans that come out to support their school. For years, students have been modifying their body to show pride in their school. The football game Wake Forest University versus Florida State University was just a regular season game. That did not stop men from painting their bodies gold, spelling out Wake on their stomachs, or wearing afros and pompoms. The crowd was a sea of gold and black representing Wake Forest, and garnet and gold for Florida State. Some people call the crazy fans youthful exuberance, tradition, or a bunch of students happy to give the tedium of studying a pass for the day. The student section is the only place for a couple of hours where Greeks, Seniors, Freshmen, wannabe millionaires, and soon-to-be-dropouts can stand shoulder to shoulder, throat to throat with the common belief their football team is going to win.

Cheers are not learned they are engraved. The reactions to events on the field are so rehearsed they become reflexive. The fans set the tone for the game. They believe they have the power of determining coin toss decisions, altering scores, and changing perspectives. College football is about the students. The students remind the players loudly who is on their side. The crazy student fans see a connection between the scoreboards, wins and losses, and the size of the crowd with themselves. While some students chose college based on their favorite sport team, others do not. But once they spend some time on campus they assume the identify of the school. College football brings people together to celebrate their school pride.

Blake Griffin by Andrew Buckley

The picture is up and coming basketball star Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers. Griffin is quickly becoming a well known player, and is known for his high flying basketball antics, as much as for his well built body. Griffin is posing for ESPN the Magazine, the Body issue, where they present the athletes with the best bodies in their respective sports. Griffin demonstrates the ideal body in today's sports world, and is a symbol of being in shape for many young kids. With Griffin being such a growing icon in the sports world, many people look up to him and follow how he acts. This picture shows what hard work and dedication to your game will bring you, and how you can be successful in today's sports.
The point that is being made in this picture is, this is how you should look. The picture of Griffin posing, almost in a Mr. Universe pose, showing that he is the top. This is what you want your body to look like because he looks like this, and he is Mr. Universe. In a sense that is what is being said, in another light, it's saying this is the body that everyone wants. He is successful, he makes money, he has this body. To get those things, you need to have this body. In the world, where girls see images of models that are tremendously skinny, males go through the same thing with pictures like this, where it's implied they should look like this to be attractive, or successful, or happy.

Boxing's Best by Jason Stellino

Manny Pacquiao is claimed to be the best pound-for-pound boxer in today’s competition. The statue, made of bronze, is a display that represents the accomplishments that Johnson made throughout his NBA career. Johnson was a player that many basketball fans would not normally have the privilege to see. He was a 6’9” player that played the Point Guard position. Usually at that height he would be considered to be too tall to play that position, but Johnson was one of the very few that has been able to be successful at playing that position with that stature. Johnson went on to win five NBA championships with the Lakers; however, his career was shortened after learning that he had caught the HIV virus. After his NBA career was over, he then when on and created the Magic Johnson foundation to help people with the same problem.

Johnson’s statue clearly displays prominence and spectacle. The prominence is shown when people go to attend Laker games or while they go shopping to the mall that is nearby the statue, it is highly noticeable, and the statue was also purposely made in a form where Johnson is leading a basketball break and pointing out somewhere to remind the public of what a great Point Guard he was. The statue also shows a case of spectacle, but in a particularly different way. The statue itself does not show it, but since the statue is a replica of Johnson, it shows the accomplishments that Johnson did not only on the court, but his great deal of work off the court which makes the statue impressive because it represents not only Johnson the player, but Johnson the person.

Calvin Klein , Euphoria (by Atousa Vafaei)

Calvin Klein Euphoria

Calvin Klein is a fashion brand founded in 1968 by American fashion designer Calvin Klein. The company located in Manhattan New York City and owned by Phillips Van Heusen. When the company started working back in 1968, its collection was a line of men’s and women’s coat. By the time that company’s revenue increased it got its license for shoes, furs, belt… and, also in 1970s the company became able to get the license for its own fragrance. Calvin Klein has been a famous brand and it has many stores in big cities of the world and like other famous brands it tries to sells by good advertising and using famous models like Natalia Vodianova, Scott king and Toni Garrn… in the advertisements. This video is one of the advertisements for the new perfume and cologne of Calvin Klein, Euphoria created in 2010. Two good looking half naked models, touch, hug and kiss each other. They are trying to show that the smell of the perfume and the cologne is the reason. If we look carefully, we see that Calvin Klein uses sensuality here to advertise its products.

Regardless of what the product is, the importance comes from how appealing the advertisement is. In this advertisement Calvin Klein has used body, beauty and nudity to create an erotic scene which attracts many audiences from different age range. The message Calvin Klein is trying to convey through the advertisement is the idea that if men or women buy “Euphoria” they will be the man or woman in the video cheek to cheek with gorgeous date or partner. The need for sex seems to be the most emphasized beside the prominence and attention. By watching this video it wouldn’t be uncommon for men or women to get slightly aroused by the fantasy that pictures of the video bring with it. Lastly Calvin Klein marketing strategy although arguably immoral, establishes appeals for audiences that allow the advertisement to efficiently convey a need to purchase this product or maybe at least to remember this product.

The Moving Wall, made of painted aluminum panels, is a traveling version of Maya Lin’s black granite, site-specific Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial in Washington D.C. Upon viewing the memorial wall during its inaugural year in 1982, veteran John Devitt was inspired to build a traveling replica “to share the experience with those who did not have the opportunity to go to Washington.”1 “The Moving Wall is the only replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Other traveling memorials are simply replicas of The Moving Wall.” In other words, this is the original copy. For more than two decades this copy has been placed in front of countless institutions including schools, veteran’s centers, and cemeteries often attempting to create the recommended setting of “a grassy, park-like area with trees” which imitates the verdant environment of the original memorial along the mall in D.C.

There are, however, many differences with the mobile replica including its half scale, variable locale, and the level plane required to view the replica whose top (instead of the base) is angled, removing the poignant experience of the descent into the ground. Despite its many differences and designation as simulacrum, it attempts to recreate the significance of the original experience. Accompanying ceremony has become a traditional part of the moving wall to assist in recreating an atmosphere of honor and respect. Furthermore, it is recommended that host sites “keep boxes of Kleenex visible and easily accessible,” as a cue to visitors of the likelihood of an emotional experience, an experience which is actualized for many visitors as is evidenced by the items left at the moving wall, just as many have left items at the permanent memorial.

This blog is an experimental exercise in the study of visual culture by students enrolled in the “Art and Visual Culture in Modern Life” course at El Camino College. Each posting is student-authored and acts as an informed observation of one small aspect of contemporary viewing. Our collaborative purpose is to become critical and informed viewers, both as we experience visual culture and as we share the information through this site.
